About The Electric Car

The electric car has been realized as a better type of car in terms of conservation of the earth’s resources and saving the environment from issues such as global warming but is it really a better option than gas guzzlers? The answer to this question like so many other questions in life is yes but probably not as much as you think. The new electric cars that are on the market can be better for the environment depending on where you live and how the electricity that goes to your home is generated. If you are like so many of the other people in the US then you probably get your electricity from the burning of coal which does little to help our ecosystems or the environment. The amount of electricity that comes from burning fossil fuels in our nation is about 50%.

In comparison to a compact Toyota Corolla with a manual transmission that gets relatively 31 mpg, the new electric cars including the Toyota Tesla promises to get 245 miles of travel with each full charge. If you break down the numbers of these two cars the corolla will consume a little over 3 gallons of gas over 100 miles which will contribute to over 63 pounds of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere and the Tesla will add 48 pounds of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere if coal is used to generate its electricity. This makes the Tesla clearly a better option in order to better protect the environment but not by much in this case. In comparison with coal produced electricity, hydro produced electricity will not add any carbon dioxide to the atmosphere making this a much better option for the environment. In regards to this if government programs are implemented to supplement other cleaner methods of generating electricity and getting electric cars in all homes around the world we can then do much more to realize a more sustainable future.
